Call Shy Birds |
What Makes Gobblers Call Shy?Call Shy - Attract from Long Distance. There are many factors that may contribute to make gobblers call shy. Hunting pressure is often the main reason. There may be several hunters hunting the same gobblers. Those birds get educated quickly and learn to avoid calling. Also older, smarter, experienced birds are less likely to come running in at the sound of a hen call. Another reason may be very natural, there are days in the woods when turkeys are very vocal, and other days they won't make a sound at all. So it may be unnatural to call on days that the birds are quiet.
Why Does the Spin-N-Strut Work? The Spin-N-Strut works for many reasons. It is a natural motion decoy that can be seen from long distances. Turkeys have extremely keen eyesight and see movement very well. The Spin-N-Strut imitates a Jake in half strut or a full strut position. When gobblers respond to your hen calls and the Jake is there tending the hen, it makes it natural for him to come in and chase off the subrogate Jake. That takes away his "Genetic Response" to hang-up because the hen is already being tended. We have harvested gobblers using only the Spin-N-Strut with no hen decoy. We believe the Tom's were coming in to chase off the Jake that is strutting in their area. Another reason the Spin-N-Strut works better then other decoys? When turkeys respond to your calls they expect to see turkeys! Turkeys that move and act like turkeys, and the Spin-N-Strut decoy is just that. It imitates the Jakes motion, where other decoys that don't move may portray an alarm body posture.
